Diaria McCoy, MA Candidate

Psychotherapist Practitioner Trainee

Hello!

My name is Diaria McCoy. I am a pre-licensed therapist working under the supervision of Erika McAfee-Levan, LPCC. I am currently working towards completing my M.A. in counseling psychology at the University of St. Thomas and obtaining my licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

My work experience as a mental health case manager has allowed me to deliver exceptional individual and family support services to individuals who are currently or have suffered from mental illnesses, substance abuse, and chronic homelessness.

From my experience, I understand the importance of providing compassionate and personalized care. In addition to providing supportive services to individuals, I am sure to cultivate a therapeutic setting that engages clients and allows them to be authentic and transparent while teaching them resources and skills that will be beneficial to accomplishing their therapy and life goals and following them throughout their life.

Both my educational experience and work experience have been very hands-on, and I have plenty of experience with goal planning, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and crisis prevention interventions.

As a therapist at Levan Counseling and Consulting, I plan to utilize techniques from the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) approach with the families and individuals I work with. EFT is an excellent therapeutic approach to use with various individuals because it interrupts the negative patterns a person is experiencing to increase the positive emotional experiences within interactions. Emotional safety is vital; in order to explore deep emotions, the clients I work with need to feel and know that therapy is a safe place to do that. My role as a therapist is to serve as a secure base for all individuals I see.
